Studies on Acupuncture and Headaches
Since the early seventies, studies around the globe have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. Recent studies show extremely positive results:

In a case study, published in the June 2003 Issue of Medical Acupuncture, doctors found that acupuncture resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from cluster headaches and to stimulate adrenal cortisol to aid in discontinuing corticosteroids.

A clinical observation, published in a 2002 edition of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, of 50 patient presenting with various types of headaches were treated with scalp acupuncture. The results of this study showed that 98% of patients treated with scalp acupuncture experienced no headaches or only occasional, mild headaches in the six months following care.

In a study published in the November 1999 issue of Cephalalgia, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of migraines and recurrent headaches by systematically reviewing 22 randomized controlled trials. A total of 1,042 patients were examined. It was found that headache and migraine sufferers experienced significantly more relief from acupuncture than patients who were administered "sham" acupuncture.

Another study published in the British Medical Journal of July 29, 2005 reports: “Acupuncture is an effective treatment for tension headache, cutting rates for sufferers by almost half.”

Experience Matters and Dr. Alderman has decades of specialization in treating Migraines
A migraine isn’t just another headache. Migraines are symptoms of a disease that has a very real effect on the pain centers of your brain. When migraines occur, pain centers in the brain are activated, resulting in throbbing pain. Additionally, other centers in the brain may be activated, resulting in symptoms of extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea (which can be potentially as debilitating as the headache itself), and aura, experience by about 15% of suffers.

It’s estimated that 28 million Americans experience migraine attacks, and the attacks are often so severe they can leave you feeling helpless and misunderstood. Family, friends, work responsibilities, and the basic activities of daily living can be just left hanging until the attack passes. Migraines can be caused by a variety of physical and environmental factors, including diet, stress, allergens, menstruation, medications, skipping meals, changes in sleep patterns, and changes in the weather. They can last from a few minutes to several days, which in some cases may completely incapacitate the sufferer.

At Alderman Medical Acupuncture, my experience and education in treating migraine and headache sufferers surpasses most in the Treasure Valley. I understand the early warning signs of a pre-headache and its food cravings, mood changes, muscle stiffness, and fatigue. I understand the disturbances of brain function and auras affecting visual impairments, the tingling or numbness of face, arms, or legs, and temporary weakness and/or clumsiness. My years of experience facilitate my ability to understand and effectively treat the post-headache aspects of migraines and associated mood changes, including depression, irritability, and fatigue with diminished concentration.

Migraine headaches are also one of the leading causes of time missed from work. It is estimated that migraines cause the loss of more than 157 million workdays each year, leading to a loss of approximately 50 billion dollars per year due to absenteeism and medical expenses. An additional four billion dollars a year is spent on pain relievers for migraines and other headaches, but many of these remedies either do not work as needed, or simply mask an underlying condition.

Acupuncture Surpasses Drug Therapy for Migraines
In one of the largest studies of its kind to date, a team of investigators in Italy examined the effectiveness of Acupuncture versus a variety of pharmacological therapies in treating migraines. Their results, published in a recent issue of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, revealed that patients given Acupuncture experienced fewer migraine episodes, missed fewer days from work, and suffered no side-effects compared to patients on conventional drug therapy. They also found Acupuncture to be more cost-efficient, estimating a savings of hundreds of millions of dollars in private and social health expenditures if it were used to treat headaches alone instead of drugs. This study concluded the following:

  • The total symptoms scores for patients using drug therapy were still nearly twice those compared to subjects treated with acupuncture.

  • The average migraine value for a patient in the drug therapy group was 65.45, a reduction of nearly 46% from the start of care.

For those in the Acupuncture group, however, the results were even more dramatic: The average Acupuncture patient's migraine values decreased nearly 80%, from 163.72 at the start of the study to just 33.17 six months later. Acupuncture patients also experienced considerably fewer absences from work in the second six months of treatment compared to drug therapy patients.

When it’s about you… Make the intelligent decision and call Dr. Alderman for your FREE consultation. What do you have to loose? Answer: Your headaches!

“If you’re a migraine sufferer, fight back and take control. Acupuncture and I just well might be your solution to getting your life back.”
